The
Hudson River – Summit to Sea:
Mount
Marcy, Adirondacks, Hudson River Valley
Maheekantuck, the Lenape name for the Hudson River, means “the river that flows both ways”; thus this river is an estuary. And with the riverbed between Newburgh and Beacon being far below sea level, it is also a fjord.
The Hudson River begins at Lake Tear of the Clouds on Mount Marcy – New York’s tallest peak at 5,344 feet – whose Algonquin name Tahawus means “Cloud Splitter.” From here the river courses through the Adirondacks and past Saratoga County. At Albany the river divides the Hudson River valley with the Heidelberg Escarpment, Catskill Mountains, and Palisades to the west, and the Taconic Range and the Hudson Highlands to the east. In New York City, the Hudson River harbor empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
Skip Doyle discusses the features of this river in respect to his 315 mile journey down this river by foot, pedaling, and paddling.
